The
Inn is located on the Juniata River in downtown historic Bedford within
easy walking distance of all of Bedford's wonderful specialty shops,
theater, and museum. In addition to our wonderful downtown historic
area, there are many attractions close by. Within several miles from
our Inn you can visit Old Bedford Village and get a glimpse of how
early settlers lived. For the sports-minded traveler, the area offers
several golf courses, tennis courts, bikes available for rent, and 30
minutes away is Pennsylvania's best down-hill skiing, Blue Knob.
"Places we recommend tend to
project the personality of the people behind the business, and, here,
because of Oralee, the Golden Eagle is exceptional. We met her
meticulously tending her side garden, a task she enjoys, taking
advantage of a warm afternoon and a few quiet hours between lunch
service and afternoon check-in. Oralee is impressive, and her love of
this inn, that extends to embrace the town, is infectious. When asked
how she came to own the inn, she admitted it was all by chance. She and
her former husband discovered Bedford when traveling the turnpike and
stranded
by a snow storm. They subsequently returned to relax in the village
that had captured their hearts."

In
the late 1700's Dr. John Anderson built the first brick building in
Bedford known as Anderson's Mansion. Dr. Anderson saw a need for a
place for stagecoach passengers and traders going to market to sell
their wares to stop for nourishment, so he opened the Golden Eagle
Tavern on the ground floor of his mansion. The Tavern also provided
food and shelter to General George Washington's troops during the
Whiskey Rebellion. The Mansion (and the Golden Eagle Tavern), remaining
in the Anderson family for many years, was also known as The Farmers'
Home at the Sign of the Bell and the Pennsylvania House, both serving
as a place where travelers could eat and spend the night.
Today, after extensive renovations aimed at preserving the original beauty of the hardwood floors, high ceilings, fireplaces, grand staircase, elegant dining rooms, and guest rooms furnished with period furniture, the Goldern Eagle Inn of Bedford, Pennsylvania again welcomes guests. |
